8 family room design ideas from 1968

By now (1968) we can see how the transition from MCM to mod is almost complete. While you can still see some MCM touches here and there, the design is dominated by mod's crazy colors and shapes. While i'm not a fan, those are still some interesting pieces of design and living history.

All the 8 family room ideas presented today were competitors in the Uniroyal Naugahyde design competition, that was open to all members of the American Institute o Interior Designs. The first 5 were the winners.

In the photograph below, the center of the room is cleared for dancing and buffet dining. Party over - wheel the two lounge ottomans and seating-serving stools into a conversation area. Use supersize ottomans as guest beds. Fold hinged rectangle game-and-dining table into a square. Protect stereo by pulling down a tambour door; raise the other for TV. Stir up the fire and relax.

Vinyl rules this roost - on walls, doors, floor, upholstery, fireplace and tabletop. Its versatile pattern and color make a powerful decorating statement, too.

This dynamic room unwinds tension kinks fast as a wink. Whether the therapy is exercising, studying or relaxing - this is the place. Fitness aficionados can bump and thump around the room without damaging the handsome vinyl-clad interior. Spread tatami mats on the floor for a cushioned exercise area for the whole family. The karate wall of tufted vinyl flips over to reveal a laminated motion picture screen.

The desk awaits after-hours work, or reading, in a pleasant indoor-outdoor atmosphere. Windows are spans of glass protected to yey level with a basketweave wooden fence. Rosewood vinyl faces the fireplace hood and desk top. Decorative ceramic tiles act as a firebed. The planting area puts greenery right at your fingertips for arrangements. There's television in a built-in storage wall opposite the window wall.

East meets west in this unusual fun-and-games room. It reflects the graciousness and serenity of the Orient, yet it functions with the practicality of the western world. Raised platform permits an ingenious storage idea - pull-out drawers conceal game sets, snacking utensils and other recreational needs. Vinyl covers the padded platform and drawer faces. Adding to the charm of this snack-lounge area is the hibachi, set in the sunken fieldstone fire pit.

Tansu chests conceal a stereo unit and a television that swings out and rotates for easy viewing. exterior of chest looks like aged wood but is a rich chestnut vinyl covering.

Vinyl grass cloth covers the wall. Underfoot, it's vinyl tiles. The plumply uphostered chair and ottoman sport another of the news-making vinyl colors.

Carefree vinyl permits black and white to come on bold without a worry about maintenance. The result is a gleaming contemproary family room with the sleek simplicity of modern architecture - a room that the all-out activist or the more passive spectator can throroughly enjoy.

Alternating panels of black-and-white patent vinyl aare divided on the wall by one-inch strips of polished chromium. These strips are repeated in the all-white vinyl storage wall where they serve as sturdy standards to support thick glass shelves, as well as stereo, compact bar and storage cabinets.

Geometric panels of combined vinyl patterns turn the entry door into a focal point. The room-length step can be used for plants or as a low table surface. Mirror panels at either end of the room reflect the side walls, adding dramatic depth to the room.

White lacquer desk fits snugly at side of love seat, where it can serve as an end table when needed. A large motion picture screen and built-in color television are concealed by bifold panels (not seen in the photograph).

The long sofa and oversized square ottomans are upholstered in a thickly textured oatmeal vinyl - a comfortable cotnrast to the glistening, shiny patent walls.

On the floor, vinyl tiles in huge checkerboard squares emphatically play up the black and white theme. One color exlamation is permited in this room - positive purple.

There's a conversation pit if you want to talk - and there's a super-colossal revolving dance floor (not in photograph) for some crazy footwork. Controlled flasing lights around the soffit fascia lend an air of mistery in a room that's vinyl from top to bottom. Ceiling, soffit, walls, furniture, floor - everything is covered with eye-catching, colorful vinyl. There's shoe storage in the music-book wall so guests stepping up to enter the room may exchange street shoes for vinyl slippers. Then they're set for walking on the plumpaneled floor, swinging on the silver dance floor, chatting int he orange-tone conversation pit, peeking through the sliding window panels, or just relaxing against the mass of rainbow-hued pillows.

In a corner of the wall across from the dance floor, there's a new psychedelic darts game played with flashing lights. When you've had enough of this sport, place vinyl-covered animals in a circle on the dance floor. set the speed, mount the animals and you have a mod merry-go-round. Even the abstract painting in the conversation pit area has movement - it's electrically wired so the colors revolve in an ever-changing display.

The breakthrough in new, tough and durable materials is at the heart of this high "eye-cue" family room. What looks like walnut is really rugged vinyl. It wraps the surface of the varisized entertainment wall units and the big and small party tables.

See how stacked units conserve space - fitting snugly along the wall, leaving the room uncluttered. the furniture, window treatment, fireplace pattern of the vinyl tile flooring - all contribute to the clean structural design of the room. Upholstery material is soft-kid vinyl in the lounge chair and a soil-retardant fabric in the sofa.

Colors are warm and friendly. Furniture wood is mellow, durable oak with some pieces stained to brighten the scene. Painted walls and beamed ceiling add to the cozy informality. Real brick backgrounds the coal and wood burning Franklin stove. A washable woven-cotton area rug defines conversation area - rolls up for a dancing session. All upholstery is nylon - spray protected to whitstand hard and constant use.

If it's a big party, the dropleaf table stretches into a regular-size dining table. The poker table has its won flat-surface cover so it can pressed into service, too. A portable television on a rolling stand (not seen in the photograph) wheels into any position for convenient viewing.

Corner cabinets handsomely showcase sportsman's guns and open shelves hold books and favorite decorative accessories. Games and toys hide in the roomy base cabinets.

Washable vinyl walls, vinyl tile floor, plastic-surfaced furniture, heavy-duty vinyl upholstery, soil-protected bright prints - all add up to the new approach tto family leisure living. An innovation - coordinated fabric print is laminated in plastic to the tabletop.

Stack wall units surprise with space - a guest bed pops out of wall and a table drops. Reversible unit faces show either basic walnut or the three-themed color of the room.

Coordinated accessories - rugs, pictures, lamps - may be purchased right along with the furniture.
