A look back at Chrysler Medallion Theatre - the episode dedicated to the American Nurse (1953)

Chrysler Medallion Theatre was a 30-minute American anthology series that aired on CBS from July 11, 1953 to April 3, 1954. Some of the episodes, under the banner "Tributes to some people we all like" were dedicated to various american jobs. I am sharing with you some very rare images of the episode dedicated to the American Nurse - by 1953 America had 550.000 registered nurses and 60.000 licensed practical nurses.

The Army (image above), Air Force and Navy nurse has long been praised for her courage and devotion to duty. These 10.000 uniformed keepers of the lamp are a vital part of the armed forces medical departments, in war and in peace. Here, a Navy nurse checks on an ambulance pick-up at U. S. Naval Air Station, Grosse Ile, Michigan.

In the clean crisp whiteness of her uniform, the nurse is the symbol of a skilled and time-honored profession. Wherever you find her at work, her cheerful smile and comforting hand are just what the doctor ordered.

70.000 of her stand stand ready to help americans at home or, if we choose, at the hospital on special duty. Equally as skilled and efficient as her general duty sister, the private duty nurse provides constant around-the-clock care for those who need it. Day or night in any kind of weather, you can always count on her on-time arrival.

30.000 choose to serve as public health nurses. Here her talents help fill a great area of human need. A visit to the bedfast mother of this far out family is welcome relief to troubled husband and children. There'll be hot meals for the youngsters, as well as competent care for Mom.

In classrooms and wards of 1.270 collegiate and hospital nursing schools, she trains for her profession. She will long cherish the hours of study and work, the activities, the thrilling climax of the capping ceremony by candlelight. She will spend 3 years of her life here, and often as much as $2.000. 100.000 students are currently enrolled (by 1953 - my annotation).

She and 163.000 teammates staff our hospitals across the country, She is there to meet you when you arrive, and you feel glad that she is. During your entire stay, her helping hand is as near as the call-button at your bedside. And while she is caring for you, she is also keeping close watch on charts and records, and assisting your doctor.
