December 1949 - last test flight of the Fairchild C-119 before entering service

Designed from the miltiary C-82 Packet plane, the Fairchild C-119 first flown in 1947. A great plane designated for cargo, troops and air ambulance. 1.100 were made untill the production stopped in 1955.

Below is an image from december 1949, the last test flight of the Fairchild C-119 before entering service. The plane is dumping water ballast. Replacing 25-pound bags of shot used prviously as ballast, the water, contained in four 720-gallon aluminum tanks, can be pumped back and forth to duplicate any load distribution. The water ballast is transferred from tank to tank at the rate for 70 gallons a minute. Electrically operated valves in each tank permit the entire liquid load to be jettisoned through 10-inch openings in the plane's floor in 75 seconds.
