1947. Boeing stratojet bomber heralds transonic combat.



Boeing's XB•47 "Stratojet" bomber heralds a new era in U. S. aircraft design. By introducing the drag-alleviating sweptback wing for the first time in a combat aircraft in this country, Boeing is pushing the modem tactical airplane into the transonic speed regime and casting the shadow of obsolescence over all previous jet bomber designs.
