The Coral

THE Coral is a house planned for an active family. Therefore, in design, the three sections of the house are isolated from each other yet each has access to the kitchen and bathroom. Thus no two basic family activities will conflict, a factor of sound design that any home owner will appreciate.

The living area-sun porch or activity room and the living room-is between the sleeping and service areas. The service area is in one wing, with the sleeping section on the opposite side. The kitchen is set in the service area, as close as possible to each part of the living section.

The storage problem is efficiently han- dled in this house, another example of good planning. The living room has two sets of bookshelves. The master bedroom has a large double wardrobe closet with a built- in vanity, while the junior bedroom also has a wardrobe closet, which is big enough for clothing of any one season. A wall closet in the hall holds out-of-season clothing and all bulky items. There is also a linen closet in the bathroom. A double garage wall holds tools and sports gear. In addition to this storage area, there is sufficient space in the storage room for all bulky equipment.

The exterior material is pastel-colored stucco over concrete block but any exterior finish material or construction will suffice. The roof is cement tile but here again any reliable substitute may be used.

The front glass jalousie door leads directly into the generous living room. Featured in this room is the large front window and built-in bookcase. A degree of spaciousness is created in this house by combining the dinette and living room.

Only a step from the dinette and sepa- rated by a breakfast bar, the kitchen makes serving painless. A large window directly over the front planting box provides a pleasant working atmosphere. Scientifically designed, the working area is placed in a "U" shape around the window. Here the range, refrigerator, working counters, and sink are arranged beneath numerous cup- boards. Sufficient cabinet space is included to meet the requirements of the average family.

One of the outstanding features of The Coral is the 25x14-foot activity or sun room. This room is well lighted by floor to ceiling jalousies and is a step down from the living room. Two large planting boxes separate the room from the living-dinette section. The exposed roof rafters give the room a free feeling for all informal activities. A door from the sun porch leads to the back yard and storage or utility room, which is used to house an oil-fired radiant heating system.

The double alcove is a distinguishing feature of the house. If you do not wish to use it entirely as a garage or do not possess two cars, half the area may be readily converted into a workshop with space remaining for extra storage. The garage doors of the single overhead type are counter- balanced to make lifting them up virtually effortless and are more popular than the vertical hinged type.

The master bedroom features among its many advantages a built-in wardrobe and vanity. It also has exposure on three sides which will allow a welcome breeze on hot summer nights. The junior bedroom has a large double window in the front and a smaller one on the side for cross ventilation. It also has one large closet. A complete bath is conveniently located between the two bedrooms.
