This is a U-shaped kitchen. The work triangle area—refrigerator, sink, range—is remarkably compact. Traffic is completely bypassed. An added attraction is the out-of-the-way office corner and breakfast nook at the lower right in the photo.
In general there are three types of kitchen plans, the straight-in-line, the L shape and the U shape. Which of the three is best adaptable to any plan depends on the amount of floor space available, and on the location of doors and windows. The U-shaped plan has long been lauded as the homemaker's dream, but highly efficient arrangements also can be achieved with the other two.
