1950 delicious chocolate cake recipe by Sunbeam

Alongside the new march 1950 Sunbeam Mixmaster ad came an interestign recipe for a chocolate cake.


Combine and sift together 4 1/2 cups sifted cake flavour, 4 1/2 tsp. double-acting baking powderand 3/4 tsp. salt. Place in large Mixmaster bowl 1 cup shortening (soft), 2 cups sugar, 4 unbeaten eggs and 2 tsp. vanilla. Beat (on speed 8) for 1 minute, scraping bowl while beating. After that turn to speed 1 and add flour mixture alternately with 1 1/2 cups milk (addin milk in 3 parts). beat enough to make a smooth batter, about 2 minutes. Scrape bowl while beating. Pour into 3 greased and floured, round 9 inch layer pans, 1 1/4 inches deep. Bake at 350F 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from pans and cool. Spread fudge frosting between layers, on sides and top of cake.

For the fudge:

Place 4 1/2 squares unsweetened chocolate and 1/3 cup butter in top of double boiler. Melt over boiling water. Combine 41/2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla and 1/2 cup warm milk in small mixmaster bowl. Beat (on speed 1) about 1 minute. Add chocolate mixture. Beat until thick enough to spread, 5 to 6 minutes on speed 9.
