The Mark Hopkins Hotel, San Francisco in 1926

The Mark Hopkins Hotel is not only an architectural beauty but an amazing feat of engineering also, as this 19 storey structure was built in only one year from 1925 to 1926. The entire electrical infrastructure was provided by Westinghouse.

Notable guests: Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Betty Grable, Elvis Presley, John Barrymore (who even lived inside for a while), Nikita Khrushchev, Charles de Gaulle, Prince Philip of the United Kingdom, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The two major attractions were: Peacock Court nightclub (that had performers like: Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey) and the fantastic restaurant “The Top of the Mark” that offered gorgeous panoramic views over San Francisco.
