While the 1st public color TV broadcast occurred on January 1, 1954 (Tournament of Roses Parade), it become somewhat widespread in the autumn of the same year. Yet only seven or eight hours a week were broadcast in color, for ~10,000 color TV sets. At that point 150 stations were equiped to splash colors across the U.S.
CBS rushed the season in August with a single color telecast of Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town, and NBC in october launched its series of 33 spectaculars with a musical comedy.
