The dedication of General MacArthur's statue in L.A. (1955)

In Los Angeles for his 75 birthday, General douglas Mac Arthur appeared for the dedication of a statue of himself. His features looked gaunt, his hands trembled. But as he spoke, and the press busily took notes, his voice came out full and clear: "...this memorial is itnended to commemorate an epoch rather than an individual, an armed force rather than its commander.... When I think of their patience under adversity, of their courage under fire, of their modesty in victory, I am filled with an emotion I cannot express."
