The Union Oil Company of California chain of gas stations took pride in its services and the firsts they made like the water and air sunken on the pump island, the individual clean towel and special fluid for the car's windows, the introduction of the cash box on the pump island, full service minute man that even emptied the ashtrays and full time cleaning and painting crews. By 1954 the chain operated 4,500 stations.
