1939 miniature yachts race at Port Washington

Models are so well rigged that often they point into the wind as closely as the finest full-sized racer. Cleverly arranged rubber-bands, wire and string compensate fot the absence of human touch at the tiller. Races are usually run the length of this 1,000-foot by 200-foot tidal basin. The little yachts tack or zigzag against the wind in one direction, round a mark.and then return to the starting point. As a boat approaches the shore, the captain deftly turns it around with his pole and starts it across the pond to the other side, where the "mate" sends it back again.
