1954 - GMC and Greyhound roll-out the Scenicruiser. An in-depth look at America's iconic bus.

Five feet longer and one foot higher than a conventional intercity bus, a new Greyhound Scenicruiser seats most of its passengers high on a rear deck providing unhindered vision in all directions. The extra five feet of length provides additional legroom between seats and space for a complete toilet and washroom. Three steps lead to the upper deck. The driver and 10 passengers ride on the lower level while 33 more passengers sit upstairs.

Tinted skylight windows in the roof provide upward vision in mountainous country. These $49,000 highway cruisers are powered by two four-cylinder diesel engines, each producing 150 horse-power. Either engine can move the bus alone if necessary in case of breakdown.

The busses are completely air conditioned and individual smoke vents enable passengers to smoke without annoying others. Built by GMC Truck and Coach Division, the bus also features air suspension which eliminates metal leaf springs. Another feature ture is a Lazy Susan luggage compartment.

Power Steering. Easier and more positive control of the bus is assured with power steering. Hydraulic action takes the manual labor out of  turning, parking, and other coach manipulation as well as giving the operator absolute control when driving over rough roads.

Drivers get a better feel of the road. The power booster also makes it easier to hold the bus perfectly steady, further serving to aid the driver. Any danger of losing control of the bus in the event of a tire blow-out is completely eliminated.

A "Flexible" transmission with six-speed se lection constitutes one of the more important mechanical improvements from the point of view of the driver.

Six speeds are obtained by providing an overdrive for each of the three forward speeds. With six speeds, the driver may make a closer adjustment to load and road conditions, and gear noise is greatly reduced.

Overdrive is amazingly simple to operate on the Scenicruiser. The driver simply moves a small lever located in the gear-shift knob, and overdrive goes into operation.

Braking action is increased through dual wheels and tandem rear axles which place 40% more tire area in contact with the road surface.

Another mechanical innovation is the substitution of a treadle for the customary clutch pedal. This control is similar to the accelerator. requiring only light foot pressure to operate.

Maximum visibility is afforded drivers by the wide. curved. wrap-around windshield which is projected ahead of the corner posts to give complete lateral as well as forward vision.

Newly-designed windshield wipers also improve visibility for drivers. More effective cleaning results from the use of a new type of wiper blade.

More accurate rear vision over a broader field is obtained through new locations for the outside rear-view mirrors, and the use of improved quality mirror glass.

The driver's compartment in the Scenicruiser is protected by a thick, tempered aluminum plate which extends around the front of the vehicle and past the driver's seat.
