The 1955 General Motors Powerama (Chicago)

Beside Soldier Field on the lakefront site of the Century of Progress, a new spectacle was filling Chicago's nights  and days with color, noise and the heady aroma of motor fumes and grease paint. There, to display its prowess in the diesel and gas turbine field, General Motors had built a gaudy, multimillion dollar 23-acre exhibition it called Powerama.

Around a fanciful central structure stood satellites where everything from buses to a dieselized cotton gin roared powerfully. A mammoth show featured dancing tractors, and a huge truck served as a pool. Scheduled to run through Sept. 25, the Powerama drew nearly 700,000 visitors its first six days.
