In general there are three types of kitchen plans, the straight-in-line, the L shape and the U shape. Which of the three is best adaptable to any plan depends on the amount of floor space available, and on the location of doors and windows. The U-shaped plan has long been lauded as the homemaker's dream, but highly efficient arrangements also can be achieved with the other two.

This corridor kitchen has range, sink and refrigerator all in a row. This arrangement insures a relatively traffic-free work area. If there is an alternate path, however, the refrigerator might be more conveniently placed across from the sink.
