A lovely mid-century modern from Birmingham, Michigan. Designed by Don Young

Designer Don Young blended glass, brick and natural wood in a 1.600 square feet home. Projecting living room wing creates protected L on each side. Adjoining living-terrace is part of informal area - screened porch, family room beyond. The three form a living unit for any weather, any ocasion. Carport shelters car and rainy-day play. It screens the terrace with head-high storage wall.

Here's a big reward of "peninsula" living room - it offers maximum exposure. Three sides form outdoor walls. Looking straight ahead, ridge line of open gable roof is off center for interest. Oversize fireplace is in scale with high ceiling. Planter and snack bar are room dividers in foreground; they outline dining area. While working in the kitchen a few steps away, June Young can oversee living room, family room, outdoor activities.

The plan's the thing in living the way you like. It should develop from your family's needs. Around a good basic plan, many attractive exterior designs can emerge. Planning comes alive in this handsome Five Star home. You see at once benefits in better circulation, more usable space even in an option to build the house in stages. Zoned living, sleeping, and family-activity areas are basic not accidental in this successful "better" house. Though modern in concept, the home displays warmth and friendliness of design.
