BH&G Five Star Home #2109

Many of you would rather not build an "ultramodern" home. But you don't particularly want a Colonial or Cape Cod house, either. You want a house that looks modest in size on the cost estimate sheet, but that looks comfortably large on your lot. It should yield more than just-adequate space within the limits of the building budget. And, more often than not these days, you want that space enclosed in a one-story house.

Study the floor plan and pictures of Better Homes & Gardens Five Star Home No. 2109, and you'll see how closely it fits those specifications. The over-all impression is one of good contemporary design that provides a congenial background for either Traditional or Modern furnishings. The simple lines of the interior and exterior are as up to date as the tick of your watch. So are the slab doors and the absence of dust-catching moldings.

But there is no hint of the flat-roofed, corner-windowed "Modern" to which many of you still object. The low- pitched hip roof, gray clapboard siding, and white trim of this home would make it welcome in any city or suburban neighborhood, no matter how Traditional or Modern the homes next door.

Living, sleeping, and work areas are well separated, yet, considering the generous dimensions of all major rooms, the plan is compact. You could fit it on a 70-foot lot.

The plan also meets the demand for more than just- adequate living space. Besides the 17x22-foot living room and the almost-as-large rear terrace, both bedrooms are big enough to serve as extra sitting rooms. The separate dining room could also double as study or as a family room.

As for storage space, it runs through the entire house, is skillfully engineered to eliminate any need for a basement. Heating plant and water heater share a closet off the front entry hall. Garden equipment is stored in a roomy closet just inside the garage door. Access to attic storage space is through a scuttle in the pantry ceiling.

Many people would rather not build an "ultramodern" home. Instead, they favor a home such as Five Star 2109 that's modest in size on a cost-estimate sheet yet comfortably large on its site one that yields more than just-adequate space within the limits of their building budget, but also well-designed areas for various activities.
