BH&G Five Star Home #2107

Just as pilot models of automobiles are built by hand and tested carefully before being put on the market, Five Star No. 2107 was created by Levitt & Sons on Long Island. Beginning with a basic plan, they built a pilot model of this house. Then, as minor flaws in workability and storage came to light, these places were torn out, redesigned, and rebuilt. On the following pages, you'll see the results of this careful planning and exhaustive research.

What makes Five Star No. 2107 operate smoothly is that every bit of space has a purpose, and one purpose only. The living room is for living-not for playing, not for eating. There's a separate dining space for eating, and enough floor space in the children's bedroom for playing. There is hall space that keeps people out of rooms which in many small homes are glorified hallways. The private room off the living room can be a den or a third bedroom or a guest room; but however it is used, its purpose is quiet privacy.

You'll find well-thought-out storage space in every room, 110 square feet of garage space for bulk storage and a shop. The kitchen has space for a food freezer and washing machine. But perhaps most important of all, you'll have two bathrooms.

Though its exterior appearance draws you to a house, the interior must be good looking and well arranged to keep you there. You won't want to leave Five Star No. 2107.

Focal point of the house-a center attraction seldom out of sight is the fireplace. You can watch its flickering fire from every room except two bedrooms; you see it as you come in the front door; you can see it as you drive by. The hearth is raised only two inches off the floor, but a brick curb makes the fire seem higher, at the same time keeps logs from rolling out and ashes from blowing. Between the fireplace and the side wall of the house is a connecting brick wall which forms a fireproof back for the range and furnace, and ties the chimney decoratively into the room.

Other important features you'll like are the bedroom-den, which is more a separate room than a part of the living area, the back-to-back bathrooms that overcome that early-morning rush, and the planned storage space.

Whatever the housing picture when you're ready to build this house, there are ways to get it built. You may have to substitute a fixed picture window for a sliding door to save steel, you may want to have a concrete-floored carport instead of a garage, and you may have to convert the second bath into temporary storage space. But whatever changes you have to make, you'll be glad you built Five Star 2107.
