General Service Studios Hollywood : television comics labor where movie stars reigned | TV Guide Chicago April 17-23 1953

BUMPER crops of television's favorite comic shows are now pouring out of the General Service Studios' sound stages at 1041 N. Las Palmas Ave., in Hollywood, where glamorous stars of the motion picture world once performed.

On its eight stages, soon to be expanded to 11, one of your favorite comedy shows probably is being produced. The list includes I Love Lucy, Private Secretary, Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, the Burns and Allen Show, I Married Joan, and Our Miss Brooks. Some non-comedies also are made there, like Cavalcade of America episodes.

These same stages, spread over 72 acres, once turned out motion picture hits, notably Jean Harlow in Hell's Angels, and starring vehicles for Hedy Lamarr, Barbara Stanwyck, Vivien Leigh and Joan Bennett. The Marx Brothers made Night in Casablanca here and James Cagney did Time of Your Life. Some of the United Artists' biggest hits originated at this site.

The four Nasser brothers James, Henry, George and Ted-took it over in 1946. They had hard times, almost folding up in 1950, but then TV shows began to click and income soared.

Now it's being billed as Hollywood's leading "Fun Factory" for the production of television films.

For a property that came close to be- ing converted into a. parking lot when the Nasser brothers were having financial troubles, it's a record comeback. This sector of Hollywood has really welcomed TV with open arms.
