Your new homes: woodland modern

This house, planned for an older couple, is to be built high on a hill with a small ravine running through the property, and a grove of white birches as its setting. The clean, modern lines of the house, belie its actual size. The major rooms, with wide window walls face the rear to take advantage of a lovely view, seven miles across the valley.

From the entrance foyer, you can reach the bedroom wing or the service areas without going through the living room. A wooden lattice screen, adjacent to the fire place, between the foyer and living room, forms a leafy partition, with pots of ivy and philodendron in its squares.

A most unusual feature is a lavatory off the master bedroom which connects with the main bathroom, servicing both bedrooms. Thus, there are two-and-a-half bathrooms, including the one off the den-guest room. In the basement, there is a garage under the kitchen, with access to the foyer by a stairway. Below the bed- room wing, there is a large, basement playroom, whose window wall is made possible by the slope of the property on that side. The rear view sketched above shows the interesting use of glass and stone for the exterior. These same structural elements are used inside, as shown below, yet the effect is warm and homelike. Here is the best of modern for living as you like it.
