Before Kmart there was S.S. Kresge Company

Sebastian Spering Kresge was the founder of two department store chains: Kresge-Newark and  S. S. Kresge Company, the later transforming into the famous Kmart.

He opened the first S. S. Kresge Company in Memphis, Tennessee, in a partnership with John McCrory. The next year they opened the second store, in Detroit and Kresge bought out McCrory.

In 1925 Kresge retired from the position of president. In 1929 the chain operated 597 stores and in 1940, 682 in U.S.A. and Canada.

On January 25, 1962, in San Fernando, California the first Kmart was opened, with  the first ground-up full-size Kmart opened on March 1, 1962, in Garden City, Michigan.

On October 18, 1966 at age 99, Sebastian Spering Kresge passed away.
