The maiden voyage of SS Champlain

The SS Champlain was built in 1932 for the French Line by Chantiers et Ateliers de Saint-Nazaire, Penhoët. It could accommodate 1.053 passengers, and operated on the Le Havre-Plymouth-New York. The itnerior design bares the signature of  René Prou. Below it's an image from the day the ship left for her maiden voyage.

When WW2 started the ship was used to evacuate civils from Europe to the United States. On 17 June 1940, the liner struck a German mine. A few days later  U-65 fired a torpedo into the hulk to ensure the liner won't be able to navigate again. Many people were injured and 12 died.
