Knit fashion of 1955

For the winter of 1954 wool knit  became stylish enough to go dancing, so cotton knit has been hopefully primping for the summer trade. This simple fabric flourished in the rerefied air of high fashion and now appears in everything from a bathing suit to a cocktail dress. Although wool knit is more elastic and comes in a wider range of weaves, cotton jersey offers strong patterns, bold colors, new textures and a whittled-down price tag. A new finish on some knits keeps them in shape through frequent washings and wearings. Simply cut, the fabric is made in the season's top silhouettes - the two-piece middy dress, the beltless sheath, the amtching dress and coat outfit. The classic Tilden tennis sweater has become a two-piece spectator dress. To all these conspicuous cottons the wearer can add showy summer jewelry from the dime store, and with the street styles brightly colored flat shoes are coming back to town.
