1947. Martin presents its six-jet XB-48

This profile of new Martin X8-48 points up craft's high degree of streamlining. Particularly interesting is unique landing gear arrangement, with two tandem main wheels in fuselage, and small taxi wheels located beneath outer engine nacelles. This type landing gear was extensively tested by Martin before application here. Note new AM star-and-bars insignia.

View from topside clearly shows mounting of XB-48's six GE turbojets, which probably are J-35's (TG-180s) each generating over 4,000 lb. thrust at sea level. These power plants are expected to give craft a lop speed of 600-mph.-plus. Long range is said to be another of plane's assets. This is first six jet conventional-design plane to be built.
