1958 | BH&G Five Star Home #2701

A simple yet elegant house from 1957 Michigan.

Colorful exterior is result of live textures and colors skilfully put together: brick, vertical wood siding painted turquoise, white trim, flush door that's yellow, areas of glass. Brick section alternating with sections of siding and windows give small house simple unity. Terrae of concrete squares is located outside family room. Gable end faces street on narrow lot. One advantage of plan is variety of orientations it can take. sixty-foot front could face street on 100 or even 80 foot lot.

If you're looking for a house to build or an idea for a new way of living, here is a fresh and exciting plan for the entire family. It's a home that should fit the average family's growth from cradle through college without revision or addition.

Square footage: 1.626, all on one floor.

Overall dimensions: 66x56 including carport

Architect: Joseph Cyr, A.I.A., Dearborn, Mich.

Builders: Wolfe-Gilchrist, Farmington, Mich.

Interiors: Robert Hanamura, Birmingham, Mich

Landscape: Lee F Rass, Birmingham, Mich.

Living room, well placed at side of plan, is separate from active area and sleeping wing. Its space is shared with no other activity, such a dining, study and play. It opens to well-screened terrace of its own. Fence and plantings also screen window wall. Center ridge beam (6x12) runs 61-foot length of house.

Four parts of the house (kitchen, dining, family area, entry) form core between living, sleeping wings. Kitchen opens to dining so counter left of range serves ass pass-through. Off-white walls, natural-wood cabinets encourage use of big eye-appealing accents of orange and blue. Play area, TV seating is on other side of traffic path. Floor throughout is asphalt tile.
