B-45 gets JATO lift on takeoff | Aviation Week, March 21, 1949

Aerojet Engineering Corp. liquid JATO units give 8000 lb. of rocket thrust to this North American B-45's 20,000 lb. of take- off thrust provided by four General Electric J-47 (TG-190) turbojets. Intense brilliance of exhaust flame is indication of use of liquid JATO rockets. Solid propellant JATO engines give less showing of flame, and heavier, dense white, smoke trail. Mounting of JATO units under nacelles indicates that they will be released after firing and lowered by parachute.
