1955 Du Pont showcase the strength of its new plastic film by using it to support a 2-ton car

One recent afternoon (1955-my annotation) engineers at the Du Pont Company swung a paper-thin sling under a car and raised it completely off the ground, thereby raising the curtain on a bright new phase of plastics which can do things no other plastic has ever done and whose development is pushing the industry into further expansion. Mylar, a third as strong as structural steel, is an excellent insulator, resists chemicals and solvents. Formed into recording tape or parachutes, it is unbreakable.
