1955 - a Douglas Skyrocket is turned into a school playground item

When the Board of Education in Tullytown, Pa. began choosing playground equipment for its new elementary school, officials decided to hunt for something different from usual swings and slides. Last month, (1955 - my annotation) successful beyond its dreams, the school became the flabbergasted but proud owner of a piece of equipment that cost $300,000 to build.

This wondrous plaything was a ground-test model of the Douglas Skyrocket, which once traveled a record-breaking 1,300 mph. Having outlived its usefulness, the naval model was headed for the scrap heap until Tullytown's congressman, Karl C. King, interceded and arranged for it to be given to Tullytown instead. Now, for only $324 in shipping costs, Tullytown has a supersonic rocket plane - a stripped model, minus motor and complicated electronic gear.
