When he was 7 Sonny Koester stole his parents car and drove 80 mph through Illinois. At 22 he became a jet pilot.

When he was barely 7, Arthur ("Sonny") Koester of Mount Prospect, Illinois had a passion for speed which gained him national fame. One memorable day in 1941, accompanied only by his 5 year old brother, Sonny climbed into his cousin's Chevrolet and then roared over the Illinois highways for three hours until he was finally caught. Confessing that he had hit 80 mph, Sonny was put on probation by a juvenile court judge and warned not to drive again until he was old enough for a license.

On April 1956, at 22, having gone through a succession of jalopies and graduated to a bright red Thunderbird, Arthur Koester moved on to bigger things. Com-missioned a Marine. Art was ready for full-time duty in a jet fighter that would whisk him through the sky at supersonic speeds undreamed of when he was 7.
